It's probably not the reaction he's supposed to have, but Elvis very nearly smiles at that. Maybe it's a little less admirable than trying to spread good cheer or whatever the hell, but it's more understandable because of that, more human, making him in turn a little more receptive to it. At least she isn't trying to fix his problems for the hell of it. He doesn't want to be a charity case, and never has, not even now that he's lost just about everything.
